Every tooth has a nerve (pulp) in its centre that runs along its length all the way to the tip of the root. If the pulp becomes exposed to bacteria due to decay, injuries or deep fillings, it can get infected. This can cause a dental infection and lead to pain and swelling. If untreated, it could also lead to an abscess or visible discoloration.
The purpose of root canal treatment is to prevent or remove the infection from within the tooth and surrounding bone by cleaning and disinfecting the root canal of the tooth. Fine instruments and anti-bacterial agents are used to achieve this.
It may be possible to complete the treatment in one or two sessions, depending on the complexity of the case. Generally, the complexity increases as one moves from front tooth towards to the back. Following completion of the root canal treatment, you may be advised to have a crown on your tooth to reduce the risk of fracture.
If you have already had root canal treatment and are getting new infection, it may still be possible to save the tooth by undertaking a re – root canal treatment alone or in combination with a minor apical surgery to retain the teeth as much as possible.
Our Dentist, Dr Disha Goyal has a special interest in root canal therapy (Endodontic Treatment) and she will advise you on your best options after assessing the long term prognosis of your tooth.
