Unlike dental fillings which are done directly inside the mouth, inlays and onlays are dental restorations that are custom designed and fabricated in a dental laboratory from a range of different materials.
Inlays (within the tooth) and onlays (on top of the tooth) are indicated on your back teeth, where there is extensive loss of tooth structure causing the tooth to become very weak. This could be due to dental injuries, large dental fillings, extensive decay, tooth wear or following a root canal treatment.
A weak tooth is susceptible to fracture which may eventually require removal. Inlays and onlays help to reinforce a weak tooth so you can chew normally without worrying about them fracturing.
This is a more conservative treatment option, which means less of the natural tooth has to be removed before fitting as compared to a crown. Inlays & onlays can be made with precious metal such a gold, but more commonly these days, we use high strength ceramic material or resins for their aesthetically pleasing results.
